Organic Cotton
Choosing organic cotton for yourself or your family makes a big difference. Conventionally-grown and genetically modified cotton productions accounts for 16-25% of the world's chemical pesticide use. This is more than any single crop. Chemical pesticides pollute water supplies and expose workers and people living in nearby communities to hazardous and deadly chemicals. A common chemical pesticide used in cotton crops in the United States is Aldicarb. One million kilograms of this chemical was used in the U.S. in 2003. One drop of this chemical is sufficient to kill and adult male. One million agricultural workers worldwide are hospitalized each year because of pesticide poisoning. Studies show that children living in areas where cotton is grown and chemical pesticides are used are affected in terms of mental coordination, cognitive skills, and balance and coordination. Additionally, chemical residues can linger in the fabric, exposing yourself and your family members to hazardous chemicals. (Source: Institute of Science of Society website.)
Only 0.15% of the world's cotton is guaranteed to be free of chemical pesticide use. There is definitely room for improvement in that statistic. The socks listed in this section are all made from certified organic cotton.
